Socialism is a better solution

The congressional response by both Democrats and Republicans over the past week's unfolding economic crisis, and the shameful vote by the Senate on the pork-loaded rescue plan, has finally convinced me that our exclusionary, two-party political system has got to go.

The Democratic and Republican parties are rooted in a system of free-market capitalism that touts economic individualism and competition and that fosters racism, sexism, classism and homophobia so evident in American society, including the Coachella Valley.

I am now convinced that democratic socialism is the only real answer to both United States and worldwide societal ills. After 40+ years as a registered Democrat, I am supporting the 2008 platform of the Socialist Party-U.S., and its candidates, Brian Moore and Stewart Alexander, even if I have to write in their names and my vote won't be counted because the party isn't on the ballot on Nov. 4.

I urge other left-leaning and disaffected Democrats and Independents to do the same, and extend the invitation to Republicans, to begin at our local-level to work to get the Socialist Party-U.S. on the next election ballot.
